Holiday surprise for Fife Gingerbread's award winning volunteers

Husband and wife volunteering duo Harry and Suzanne Wight, who picked up prizes at Fife Voluntary Action’s Awards night in June, were surprised with a family holiday to Elie Holiday Park courtesy of Abbeyford Leisure, in recognition of their selfless volunteering efforts.

The couple, along with their four children, spent a week together at the beautiful Shell Bay in the East Neuk of Fife. David J Evans, Chairman for Abbeyford Leisure, said ”As soon as we heard about the amazing efforts and positive impact that Harry and Suzanne have made on the local community we were delighted to recognise their achievements in this way. The couple's personal journey and range of volunteering work serve as an inspiration to us all."

The surprises didn’t end there, with members of local business network group, Fife Networking, donating a whole host of items to the couple to make their holiday extra special. The group came together to donate £350 spending money, passes for Elie Sea Safari, vouchers for family activities East Neuk Outdoors, and a Family Photo Shoot to commemorate the holiday.

They also donated a meal at the Holiday Park restaurant, voucher for a Fish & Chip shop, breakfast and picnic hampers, and a voucher for a meal at Ship Inn. Additionally they provided beach towels, buckets and spades, parasols, wind breakers, travel rugs, and a swing ball set. The children also all got hoodies courtesy of Forth Valley Promotions.

Rhona Cunningham, CEO of Fife Gingerbread and member of Fife Networking, said “I’m so happy these two superstars have had the opportunity to go on a family holiday, it’s so well deserved for the amazing volunteering work they do. I have to say a big thanks to Abbeyford Leisure for their amazing gesture, and to all those involved in Fife Network and beyond for pulling together to help make the family holiday extra special”.

Suzanne, who won the FVA’s prestigious Volunteer of the Year Award, started off volunteering at a cooking group run by Fife Gingerbread project ‘The Gateway’, with the group now running autonomously thanks to Suzanne’s leadership. She has also been a driving force in the resurrection of the Methilhill Gala, and has been a buddy to two lone parents. Suzanne somehow finds time to pursue her love for baking, and even baked 200 cupcakes for a Fife Gingerbread event in 2017.

Harry picked up FVA’s Active Volunteer Award in recognition of his efforts to set up Levenmouth Cycle Club, after being involved with The Gateway project’s cycle initiatives. Harry has gained grants and funding for the club, and has established links with other local organisations to create an initiative that brings families together and helps reduce isolation.
