New year, new charity

Abbeyford Leisure team members raise money for Cancer Research UK

Sunday 6th January dawned dark and dreich. A heavy, cold mist lingered as thousands of intrepid adventurers gathered at Fife's Knockhill Racing Circuit in readiness to tackle MacTuff: Scotland's toughest obstacle course race.

Among them were 15 members from Abbeyford Leisure who had readily given-up the last day of their festive break to battle the elements and a challenging 15k terrain to raise money for Cancer Research UK, Abbeyford's named charity for 2019.

Geoff Little, St Andrews Holiday Park General Manager and Team Captain said: "This is a real challenge of physical grit and mental determination - it's not for the faint hearted!

"The team endured 45 obstacles including vertical rope ascents, monkey bars, scramble nets and cold water submersion... they had to carry wet sand bags and car tyres and wade through epic amounts of mud - mud, mud and more mud!

"But we did it! I'm immensely proud of the whole team which included colleagues from both St Andrews and Elie, but a special shout out must go to our Grounds Manager, George Robertson (65), who kept right up there with younger participants."

Cancer Research UK is the latest of a series of charities to be supported by Abbeyford Leisure. Chairman, David J Evans said: "As we celebrate Abbeyford's 70th year it is important to us to continue our charitable commitments. Last year we focused our efforts on supporting the Scottish Association for Mental Health, a fantastic charity introduced to us by our local Fife MSP and leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Willie Rennie, who is a real advocate of the holiday parks sector.

"This year, we turn our attention to Cancer Research UK, a truly pioneering charity that is starting to see some very positive results. We will of course, continue to support smaller charities: Fife GingerbreadMeningitis Association ScotlandRonald McDonald HouseThe Brain Tumour Charity and Rotary Club of Leven have all benefited recently from our support.
